The Nissan Xterra is a midsize, two-row SUV based on the Nissan Frontier pickup truck. The first-generation Xterra went on sale in 2000, named for the Generation X buyers it targeted. A second-generation Xterra arrived for the 2005 model year and received regular but minor updates during the decade it was on sale. In addition to significant off-roading talent, the Xterra oozed sportiness and utility. It had a stepped-roof design with a sturdy roof rack, hidden rear door handles, boxy fender flares, and a quirky asymmetrical tailgate. The interior was just as purposeful, and the second-generation Xterra offered a powerful 4.0-liter V6 engine paired with a manual or automatic transmission and rear-wheel or four-wheel drive. The downsides to the Xterra were unimpressive ride and handling on pavement and poor fuel economy. Ultimately, as consumers increasingly chose to drive crossovers, Nissan quit building this traditional truck-based SUV.
